Saturday Afternoon Marching Bands

September 13, 2009 By Pat Williams

Loved the Third Annual Marching Band Preview Show organized by Walled Lake Central High School! I attended it last year at Central and was blown away by how well these high school students perform after a mere month of practice.

This year the event was held at Northern and the variance in the routines and music impressed me further.

Steven Clark of Detroit’s Channel 7 Action News introduced the bands and entertained the audience with his humor and University of Michigan vs. Notre Dame football game updates. He made a point of thanking the parents for their part in their children’s marching band successes.

This first video includes snippets from the performances of Walled Lake Western, Novi, Milford and Walled Lake Central Marching Bands. Novi High School Marching Band’s performance was part Marching Band, part theatrical production. The same can be said for Walled Lake Central Marching Band. There were moments that made me gasp because the music, timing and choreography was exciting, fun and surprising. No wonder they’ve won many awards!

This video is Walled Lake Northern Marching Band’s entire performance. “Boogie Knights” is fun to watch and causes parents of the disco era to sing along. Mary Hulliberger is an excellent director and could possibly have a second career as an announcer. GO Knights!

I can’t help but get a little mushy when all the bands come together and perform “America the Beautiful”:
