Escapees RV Club & Mail Forwarding Service

If you’ve never considered traveling full-time (or even “half-time” for months at a stretch), you probably haven’t considered the logistics of boring-but-critical things like mail, taxes, licensing, insurance, and a legal address.

One thing I learned quickly: every local, state, and federal system wants a fixed place to pin you to a map. It’s nearly impossible to do much of anything without a physical address — and a standard PO box often isn’t accepted by banks, insurers, or government agencies.

When I decided to travel full-time, this was a major hurdle. I wouldn’t have been able to get a loan for my fifth wheel without a permanent address. Underwriters don’t love the words “full-time travel.” They want to know exactly where to find you if you default. Many RVers solve this by using a family address — but my family is in Canada (out-of-country addresses weren’t an option), and I didn’t want to burden my young adult kids with the “mail management” job while they were still building their own lives. If you’ve never considered traveling full-time before, then you probably haven’t considered the logistics of such things like mail and taxes.

Enter Escapees

Escapees RV Club was founded in 1978 by the Peterson’s who were traveling full-time and wanted to resolve the issue of getting mail while on the road.  At that time, they didn’t even have mobile phones for communication! Their mail forwarding services is the largest private forwarding service in the USA.  Mail is delivered daily in a semi-trailer to their facility; they service a lot of RVers!  I’m not sure why I can get mail at their facility and the address they give me is acceptable to the government, banks and insurers but I assume they have a smart legal team who has figured it all out for us.  And for that, I am thankful.

Today, Escapees has expanded into a broader “total support network” with community, education, events, and member discounts.

A quick 2024 update

In July/August 2024, Harvest Hosts acquired the Escapees membership + events business (community, education, events, etc.). The Carr family (grandchildren of the founders) continues to operate the Escapees mail service and Escapees RV Parks separately.

That means: Escapees still looks and feels like Escapees from a member perspective — but behind the scenes, different parts of the ecosystem are now managed by different entities.

Mail forwarding (and why it’s such a big deal)

I personally loved having a professional mail option while moving around, because it isn’t always easy to find a reliable place to receive mail when you’re hopping between campgrounds, boondocking spots, and “we’ll only be here a week” stops.

When I was on the move, mail scanning was the real sanity-saver: less paper clutter, fewer missed deadlines, and easy digital storage. When I stayed in one place for longer stretches, I’d batch it and have mail forwarded periodically.

Important note: Escapees’ own site now states the Mail Service is operated independently and isn’t managed by the Escapees RV Club. They also direct members to an external mail portal for account management.

Escapees is more than mail

Over the years, Escapees has grown into a bigger support network than “just mail.” Members can tap into things like:

  • Community + education + events that range from big gatherings to smaller interest groups
  • Member discounts (tires, services, RV essentials, and more)
  • Roadside assistance options

Xscapers (for working-age RVers)

There’s also Xscapers — a community within Escapees built specifically for working-age RVers earning from the road.

Back in 2018, when I first penned this post, I wrote that I hadn’t attended an event yet — but that’s no longer true.

Update from my road life: I did make it to the Michigan gathering, rang in the New Year twice in Quartzsite, and attended two Convergences in Arizona. They were a fantastic time — I met real friends and learned a ton, both from the sessions and from the casual “campfire + parking-lot” conversations that end up being just as valuable.

These days, my travel looks different. I’m doing smaller RV trips and focusing on other types of travel, so I’m not currently an active member — but I’m genuinely glad I leaned into the community when I did.

Domicile

law: a person’s fixed, permanent, and principal home for legal purposes

I spent a week in the Escapees world in Livingston, Texas while I jumped through the hoops to domicile in Texas. Since I was considering it as a long-term home base, I took time to look around and get my bearings.

One upside of doing the paperwork in a small town: there isn’t a lot of drive time between the places you’ll bounce around — inspections (if applicable), county offices, licensing, registrations, etc. Don’t be fooled, though…

The waits can still be painfully long, and you may go back and forth multiple times to satisfy documentation requirements.

A key update: Texas vehicle inspections changed in 2025

In the original version of this post, I described Texas safety inspections and the “hightail it to an inspection station” urgency once you re-enter the state.

Texas rules changed on January 1, 2025. The Texas Department of Public Safety notes that most non-commercial vehicles no longer require a state safety inspection due to House Bill 3297.

What still matters: some areas still require emissions testing, and Texas procedures for registration/renewal can vary depending on your situation and county. If Texas domicile is on your shortlist, it’s worth verifying the current rules right before you make the switch.

Considerations Before Establishing Residency

If Texas isn’t your preferred state, Escapees has historically supported domicile options in states that tend to work well for RVers (commonly Texas, Florida, and South Dakota). Mail-forwarding setups and address options are also commonly discussed in that context.time, they backed me up on a major vehicle related claim and another claim for hail damage to my home. My neighbors didn’t get the same coverage with other insurers, so I stayed loyal to Nationwide for years. But this year, the price increases were coming faster than I could keep up—frustrating, especially with a completely spotless driving record.

I considered Florida at the time but would have had to change my insurance situation, and I’ve been loyal to my provider for a long time due to how they showed up when I needed them. South Dakota wasn’t convenient for me to visit during that stretch — but depending on your routes, it can be worth considering.

Texas state income tax was also a factor for me then — one of those practical decisions that isn’t glamorous, but definitely affects long-term finances.
