I spent a fun-filled birthday weekend in Southern Ontario and Buffalo, but came home on June 8th to storms, chaos and no electricity.
As I drove north along M5, I was serenaded by tornado sirens and found myself spending more time keeping an eye of the sky instead of the road.
We were fortunate, no home or property damage, but there were many trees uprooted north of us.
The worst of our woes was living without electricity for 6 days.
I experienced a surreal moment on June 10th. After driving several miles north and surveying all the storm damage; I found myself dancing at the Jimmy Buffett Concert being held in the DTE Music Center… knowing that DTE still hadn’t restored power to approximately 40,000 homes, including mine.
The number of DTE serviced homes in Michigan without power that week was over 300,000. Thank you to the local crews and the crews that came from neighboring states; I’m sure they worked many long and hard hours to restore our power.
Meanwhile, at home, the heat was uncomfortable, while the noise from all the generators made sitting outside an assault on our ears. The boredom was endless – I had trouble living without my computer! Overall, we remained thankful that these issues were temporary. DTE finally had time to fix the wires down near our home on Friday June 13th – a lucky day for us!
Below are the rest of my photographs of the storm damage on Flickr.

Update: Apparently our central AC died as a result of the storms so we weren’t entirely untouched. Still happy it wasn’t a tree on our house.
