New Math

I love teachers who integrate alternate methods of teaching - and styles of learning - into the regular classroom work. My son's math teacher gave Cayce and two of his friends a video assignment for her class. My son worked on this every day last week and we all had a great time watching him create the scenes and observe how he weaved them together. This kid has a vision before it gets filmed. Perhaps this will be part of his future? Can't see the video? Click here. I'm a little Continue reading

Walled Lake Northern Marching Knights

Walled Lake Northern Marching Knights

Can't see the video? Click here. I meant to get this online a couple of weeks ago, but life got busy. This is the WLN Marching Band's 2011 pre-show and show. The video was taken October 6th during the visit by Clifford Smart, Sarah Banks and James Geisler Middle School Bands. The football game was against Lakeland High School. The pre-game music includes the Northern FanFare, the Northern Fight Song, the Cupid Shuffle, the Northern Alma Mater and the National Anthem. The show theme Continue reading

Our Fine Four Fendered Friend!

Our Fine Four Fendered Friend!

I haven't had the pleasure of attending a Walled Lake School District theatrical production before last night. As is typical with most parents, as soon as their child signs up to be involved, presence is voluntarily obligatory. I was excited to hear my son play with the orchestra accompanying the actors singing in Walled Lake Northern's production of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. Once again I was impressed with the quality of Walled Lake Schools Performing Arts Department. I found myself Continue reading

Walled Lake Holiday Collage Concert on Video Part 5

These are the final videos from the Walled Lake Holiday Collage Concert. I wish I had been able to record the entire show but I didn't. My Flip video camera only records an hour and ran out of space right before the Halleljah Chorus finale. The following video is Symphony Strings performing Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24. A show of this magnitude has many people to thank, (1200 students from three high schools, performed over two days for three shows). The video below is the speech Continue reading

Walled Lake Holiday Collage Concert on Videos Part 1

I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools Holiday Collage Concert at Walled Lake Northern last Saturday night. We were lucky to get tickets for one of the three - not to be missed - sold out shows. While watching 1200 students perform, I sat in amazement of the organization and production skills that went into a show of that magnitude. Below are videos 1 and 2 from Interval 1 of the evenings performances... Performances by the Women's Chorus and Continue reading

Having Trouble Saying “No” to Your Kids?

Having Trouble Saying “No” to Your Kids?

As parents our first instinct is to give our children everything they need, but we have trouble drawing the line at giving them everything they want. Learning to say no to your children is an important part of their development; it keeps them safe, teaches them gratitude, it even shows them how to self-regulate their own behavior. It's obvious in young children when parents have difficulty setting boundaries. As children get older, and more adept at reasoning (or arguing!), it only becomes Continue reading

Should Independent Thinking be a Punishable Crime?

Up On The Housetop by WLN Symphony Band

Up On The Housetop by WLN Symphony Band

A little Christmas music to celebrate Santa's arrival tonight! Up On The Housetop is performed by the Walled Lake Northern Symphony Band at their Winter Concert on 12-10-09. Have a wonderful day tomorrow, I hope it's full of love and music! Video: I knew this song as "Up On The Rooftop" but my son corrected me saying it's "Up On The Housetop," I wonder if it's an American-British thing again. Anyway, here's the words as I remember them, so you can sing along: Up on the Continue reading

30 Days of Thanks – Day 18

30 Days of Thanks – Day 18

Today I am thankful for my Flip Mino HD. I've used it to get video testimonials from a few clients on the real estate side of my business but I LOVE to use it to capture the Marching Band performances in a way that my camera can't - with sound and movement. After all isn't that what a Marching Band is all about? For a sample of the Flip and to see the last 2009 Walled Lake Northern Marching Band performance of 2009, watch the series of videos below. The high school marching band closed the Continue reading

Homecoming Fashion Show at WLN

Homecoming Fashion Show at WLN

I was a little surprised when my son told me he was participating in the high school fashion show, modeling wasn't something I thought he was interested in. The fashion show is raises funds - I assume for the homecoming dance or prom - and provides entertainment for the audience and kids involved. I'm sure it took a lot of time and coordination on the part of the organizer and participants; it was a lot of fun to watch. If you have a facebook account you can see how the students Continue reading

Saturday Afternoon Marching Bands

Loved the Third Annual Marching Band Preview Show organized by Walled Lake Central High School! I attended it last year at Central and was blown away by how well these high school students perform after a mere month of practice. This year the event was held at Northern and the variance in the routines and music impressed me further. Steven Clark of Detroit's Channel 7 Action News introduced the bands and entertained the audience with his humor and University of Michigan vs. Notre Dame Continue reading
